Art and Craft Show Shopping Tips

It’s prime season for art and craft shows as the holidays are fast approaching. Here’s a few simple tips to make the most of your shopping experience.

1. Get there early. You’ll get first pick of the merchandise. Sellers will have their complete inventory, and are primed an ready to answers questions and to help you out.

2. Bring a bag. Sellers will normally offer you a bag for your purchases, but why not help out the environment and bring your own. You can combine your purchases in one large bag and also have a place to stash your coat and other belongings leaving your hands free to check out the goods!

3. Keep your conversations to the side. Stopping in front of a booth for an extended length of time keeps others from being able to view artists work. You’d like the same courtesy extended you you of course while you are shopping.

4. Don’t forget to grab a business card whenever an artist catches your eye. It may help you remember which booths you want to return to after you’ve visited everything in the event, or you can hang unto them keep track of your favorite artist at other events and online.

5. Don’t be afraid to look at the price tags. Some items that may look expensive might turn out to be very wallet friendly. Others might be well worth the extra expense due to their high quality or premium materials. Also don’t assume that a high price on one piece means a high price on everything. Artists usually present a range of work to meet a variety of price points.

6. Go ahead and ask questions. Many artists are happy to share their inspirations with you, and to tell you about the quality of your work. Just don’t be surprised if they keep some of their processes secret though–that’s part of their intellectual property as artists, and many have spent a lot of work developing the trade secrets of their craft.

7. Check out all the corners, nooks and crannies, and look closely in each booth. True, large and catchy displays really do often have some excellent items. However, that extremely unique item might be hiding in a dark corner of the show, or as part of a diverse display.

8. Bring a friend and have fun. It doesn’t have to be a chore to shop, it can be a festive fun event. Share thoughts, compliments and it can be an enjoyable experience.

9. Don’t forget to bring cash. A lot of artists do take credit cards, but some may not. In addition, when you pay with cash you save the artists the cost of paying a fee to the credit card company.

10. Keep in mind that when you buy handmade you are helping artists to make a living, and you are purchasing unique, often well-made, and locally created goods. Your purchases make a difference in your very own community.

Art Fair Neighbors

A few weeks ago a friend posted one of this potters videos made on xtranormal. The creator is back again with another funny video making a parody of some of the events that occur at an art show. This latest pokes fun at less than desirable “art show neighbors” Every now an then at an art show you have one of these days. Luckily they don’t happen that often around here; thank goodness for most Cleveland Area artists!
Enjoy!

Cleveland Handmade Last Minute Market 2010

MY favorite show of the year is approaching fast. I love being a participating artist and I love shopping at it. It’s a festive, fun and art filled day.

This year there is an extra special early bird admission. Come an hour early and donate $5 to the Hunger Network of Greater Cleveland and you get a head start on the shopping, complimentary breakfast refreshments, and entry into the drawing for door prizes. (I know I donated several pairs of earrings, cards, and photographs…I’ve heard rumors of cutting boards, dryer sachets, knit goods and more. These baskets are going to be GREAT!)
Better yet, your donation will go ENTIRELY to the Hunger Network, and that $5 can feed approximately 20 people!
Visit the Last Minute Market site for more detail on the Early Bird Admission

If you can’t make it by 9 am, the FREE event begins at 10 a.m. and goes until 6 p.m. on December 18th. There will be crafts, art, food, a craft-off challenge, and don’t forget the open artist studios in the building as well.

I can’t wait, but if you do WAIT to buy last minute gifts, this is certainly the place.

Bazaar Bizarre Cleveland 2010

Bazaar Bizarre will be back in Cleveland again this year, and I’ll be attending once again.
The show again is at the 78th Street Studios, and will be full of totally buy-able art, accessories, bath products, and other goodies. I noticed there’s a few new vendors, and several from out of state as well.

I’ll be bringing my mixed metal jewelry, as well as a lot more pieces in my expanded line of photography. Plus, there are a few mixed media art surprises from a collection I’m unveiling this Winter season. (Hint: think metal, think sculpture, think photographs!)

Calling Animal Lovers-The Animals in Art Benefit is almost here!

I was recently asked by the lovely Gina DeSantis if I would like to join other artists in Animals in Art 2010, which is a benefit for the Orange Arts Center and PetFix Northeast Ohio. Being the owner of two shelter kitties, and an arts lover I couldn’t resist. (Of course it might have had something to do with Gina telling me about the wine pull part of the fundraiser; spend $10 and pull a bottle and it might be worth up to $200. Now THAT sounds fun!)

There’s a special patron party on Thursday December 3rd from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Your $30 donation ($25 tax-deductible) gains you entry to the exhibition party with wine, hors d’oeurves and select pieces especially designed with animals in mind from over dozens of artists.
Call the Orange Art Center at 216-831-5130 to reserve your tickets today.

There is also a craft sale on December 11th and 12th, with free admission and lots more art!

Recycled Renaissance

I’ve taken a slight detour from my modern and nature inspired jewelry lately to revisit some ancient medieval and renaissance themes. In doing so I’m also introducing my new line of jewelry with recycled sterling silver. All the raw sheet metal I use in these pieces is *greener* and more earth-friendly than just any old sterling.

Check out my new crest necklaces (currently a dragon and a griffin are available) as well as more gothic style cuffs that combine leather and metal.
